The questions we get asked most about Neem Flakes — answered honestly.
Neem flakes are cold-pressed neem cake — the byproduct of extracting neem oil from neem seeds. They contain azadirachtin at a concentration suitable for soil application. Neem oil is for foliar use. Neem powder is finely ground and has a faster but shorter-duration release. Flakes decompose more slowly, providing longer-lasting protection at the soil level.
No. At recommended application rates, neem flakes do not harm earthworms. Azadirachtin targets insects with specific hormonal systems — earthworms are not affected. In fact, neem has been shown to support earthworm populations by reducing the parasitic nematodes that prey on them.
Neem does not provide instant knockdown — it is not a contact pesticide. It works by disrupting the hormonal systems of insects, preventing them from feeding, moulting, and reproducing. Visible reduction in pest activity typically occurs over 2–4 weeks as the current pest generation fails to reproduce. The most effective use is preventive rather than reactive.
Yes. Neem is widely used in certified 100% Natural vegetable and fruit production globally. Azadirachtin breaks down in soil within weeks and does not accumulate in plant tissue. It is safe to use on food crops throughout the growing season. The recommended withdrawal period before harvest is 7 days as a standard precaution.
With caution. Very young seedlings (under 2 weeks) can be sensitive to neem. For seedling trays, it is better to use plain cocopeat and vermicompost. Introduce neem at transplanting stage — mix it into the potting medium when moving seedlings to larger containers.
When used as a soil incorporation (which is how Prahas Neem Flakes are intended), neem has no meaningful impact on bees and other pollinators — they do not come into contact with the soil-incorporated material. The concern about bees applies to neem oil foliar sprays applied to flowers. Soil-applied neem flakes are safe for pollinators.
Store in a sealed bag or airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture and UV exposure degrade azadirachtin. Properly stored, neem flakes retain potency for 12–18 months. A faint neem smell is normal — if the smell has completely disappeared, the azadirachtin may have degraded.
